What a gal!

As part of a wedding gift, my father-in-law gave me a book on the courtship between Jonathan & Sarah Edwards, entitled, Marriage to a Difficult Man (I definately appreciated the humor 🙂 ) While reading through the book, I came across a delightful quote that Jonathan had apparently scribbled on the inside-cover of one of his Greek grammar books. It is one of the most insightful and descriptive glimpses into the beautiful relationship between Sarah (his girlfriend, at the time) & her God…

They say there is a young lady in [New Haven] who is beloved of that almighty Being, who made and rules the world, and that there are certain seasons in which this great Being, in some way or another invisible, comes to her and fills her mind with exceeding sweet delight, and that she hardley cares for anything, except to meditate on him–that she expects after a while to be received up where he is, to be raised out of the world and caught up into heaven; being assured that he loves her too well to let her remain at a distance from him always. There she is to dwell with him, and to be ravished with his love, favor and delight, forever. Therefore, if you present all the world before her, with the richest of its treasures, she disregards it and cares not for it, and is unmindful of any pain or affliction. She has a strange sweetness in her mind, and sweetness of temper, uncommon purity in her affections; is the most just and praiseworthy in all her actions; and you could not persuade her to do anything thought wrong or sinful, if you would giver her all the world, lest she should offend this great Being. She is of a wonderful sweetness, calmness and universal benevolence of mind; especially after those times in which this great God has minifested himself to her mind. She will sometimes go about, singing sweetly, from place to [place]; and seems to be always full of joy and pleasure; and no one knows for what. She loves to be alone, and to wander in the fields and on the mountains, and seems to have someone invisible always conversing with her.”-Jonathan Edwards

About Elizabeth

I am a sinner, saved by grace striving to increase in the knowledge of my Savior and His precious Word each day. The reader should know that there are a few presuppositions with which I approach this blog: 1) I believe in the biblical gospel, which basically purports that all mankind is born under the curse of sin (due to the sin of Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden). Therefore, man is separated from God and can have no relationship with God because He is perfectly holy, not even able to look upon sin. Unfortunately, God is also perfectly just and must not only separate Himself from sin, but must also punish it. In order to reconcile man to Himself, God, the Father, sent God, the Son, down to earth to live as a man and take our sins upon Himself on the cross. While on the cross, God, the Son, bore the full weight of the wrath of God, the Father, against our sins in order that we who believe in Him might be set free from the curse of our sin. God, the Son, Jesus Christ, died as a propitiation for our sin in order to appease God, the Father's, holy and just character, redeem us from sin, and reconcile those who believe in this gospel to God, the Father. 2) I am primarily writing to those who already believe in this biblical gospel. In other words, this blog is not focused on evangelizing the lost, but edifying believers. 3) I believe that the Christian Bible is the very word of God. Therefore, it is completely inerrant, infallible, sufficient, and authoritative in the life of a believer.

Wow, what a wonderful reminder of what a godly woman really is! It starts with a pure heart, and then overflows like a fountain…the joy and peace that follows can’t be contained! I am going to quote you in this post (again) for my bible study on Purity next week. Thank you for continuing to give me excellent material! Sure you don’t want to come here and teach it yourself?? : )

LOL… I would be delighted! Actually, Jarett has already infomed us that it is God’s will for us to be out there anyway 🙂 (lol). Since I don’t want to be outside of God’s will, I think it would be good for us to consider the move… now all we have to do is convince your son (my hubbie 😉
